Dear Sarah,
I want to write the French word "voila" on my computer.
I know it has that accent on the letter "a," but I can't
figure out how to put it in. Help!!
P.S. I am working in Microsoft Word. Rachel
Dear Rachel,
You silly. Just go to the menu bar at the very top of
your Word document. (Left to right: File, Edit, View, Insert,
etc.) Click on "Insert" and buzz down the choices to select
"Symbol." A window will pop up on your screen. Click on
the top bar of the window to move it to a convenient location
(e.g., not sitting on top of your document). You'll see
that accented letter "a" in fact you'll see a few
different ones.
Treat yourself to a nice long look at *all* the symbols
that are available to you: WOW!
You'll get an even wider selection of symbols if
you review every one of the "font" layers: simply click
on the up/down arrow button next to the field at the top
of the window. Presto! Webdings, Wingdings, and Dingbats!
My favorite choices include scissors, lots of stars, and
arrows. And at this time of the year, I love using the baseball
stadium. (See if you can find it!)
Now, follow these four steps to place one of the symbols into your Word piece:
1) In your Word document, position the cursor where you
want the symbol to be entered. 2) Select the symbol you'd like to use. 3) Press the "Insert" button. 4) Close the window and get back to writing!
Voila!
P.S. By the way if you use these symbols in e-mail, they
may not survive the trip. (In fact we can't even reproduce
them in this html copy.) But if you write in Word and attach
the file as a Word document, you should be fine.
