Dear Sarah,

What's a "cache" and what should I do about mine? —regina

Dear Regina,

A cache is all the stuff your browser saved from the last time you were at a Web site. I know, I know: I sound like the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. But stay with me.

Say you went to Citibank's site last week. You got a totally drab, corporate-looking Home Page. And today if you go to www.Citibank.com, you get the same drab Home Page that's in the cache.

That's better for you, because the download time is minimized.

The bad news is that when a Web site updates its Home Page, you're clueless. You'll just keep on going back to that same old cached Home Page. And guess what? www.Citibank.com launched a fabulous new design this week, only you don't know about it. If you don't have a browser that empties your cache regularly, you'll get that "old," cached version over and over and over again.

So empty your cache regularly! It's like, well, flushing.

How to do this? Go into "Preferences" when you're in your browser. Look for the heading that says "cache." Push the button that says "empty cache."

Note: My trusted technical guru tells me that hitting the shift button on your keyboard along with the"reload" button on your browser will also load the newest version of a page, using the live, not cached version. This works most of the time, he says, but emptying the cache is the best way.

Let me know how it works out.

Sarah

P.S. My dictionary says "Cache" is a place for concealment and safekeeping; the French verb "cacher" means "to hide."
