Dear Sarah,
Are chat rooms safe?

    –DeTak

Dear DeTak,

Of course chat rooms are safe. They're virtual. They're voluntary. You can leave whenever you want. These people are not in your apartment building: they're in your machine, on your phone lines–and nothing you say or do will suck you in, put you at risk, or cause a wacky fellow chatter to materialize before your very eyes. Unless, that is, you do something very stupid, such as give out your real-world address and phone number.

In my opinion there are only two scary things about chat rooms: either they're a colossal waste of time; or they're unsupervised, in which case all hell can break loose. Think of having a birthday party for your favorite 5-year-old and his friends. Imagine what would happen if you put all those kids into a room, left the house, and expected them to entertain themselves for an hour. It wouldn't be pretty: the bullies would beat up the shy kids, the whiners would focus attention on unimportant stuff, and it would be a mess.

Moral: Be picky. Look for chats that are "hosted" properly.
